Find More Money in Your Month

They said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.” And He said, “Bring them here to Me.” Ordering the people to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds,…
and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full baskets.”  ~Matt. 14:17-20.

These verses are referring to Jesus miraculously feeding 5000 hungry men–as this number does not include the number of women and children (see v. 21)–with only five loaves of bread and two fish! And, there were twelve baskets full of food left over. He, later, fed about 4000 people with seven loaves and a few small fish.  Seven baskets full were left over.  You can read about it in Mark 8:1-9.

Did you notice what Jesus did when He received the loaves and fish?  He looked to heaven–He saw His Father, His Provider of all things.  He knew God’s (His Father’s) heart of compassion, and full of lover for the people. Then, He blessed the food!

Bless simply means “to speak well of.” Blessing is speaking Life-giving, Life-promoting words.

Dr. Caroline Leaf, a cognitive neuroscientist with a PhD in Communication Pathology specializing in Neuropsychology, has done a lot of research in regard to how toxic thoughts are damaging to the neurons in the brain. Studies show that these neurons are positively changed when the individual incorporates positive changes in their thoughts which would include what they believe and speak.  MRI’s show the changes in the neurons in 21 days, though signs of changes can be seen around the fourth day.  They actually transform from looking like dead trees, to trees that look more full and alive.  If you’re interested, you can read more here

Blessing–speaking well of–changes things even if you can’t see what’s happening with your natural eyesight.  You can speak blessing to your bank account!  Whatever you have in it can be multiplied!  You don’t have to know how.  All you need to know is that God loves to provide for you because He is a loving Father!  He loves you with a perfect Love that you could never earn, and you can never quench!

Did you also notice that after the people were fed, the disciples didn’t just leave the fragments of food scattered around?  They actually gathered them up! Then, they discovered that Jesus had not only taken care of the needs of the people, but He met them above and beyond!!  Both times, Jesus met needs over, and above what was needed for that meal.  That is just how God is!  He is extravagant!

He is still doing this today!  Have you taken time to notice where fragments might be in your finances so that you can gather them up and make wise use of those financial blessings?

Here are some suggestions to cut your spending so you can save some money::

*eat out once or twice a month instead of once or twice a week

*ask cell phone service about less expensive plans

*shop at discount stores whenever possible

*check for cheaper plans for cable or satellite tv

*put off purchases of clothing, new phones, games, gadgets

*consider not buying extended warranties on appliances, etc

*go to movies at matinee time instead of prime time

*shop for lower-interest loans (watch for any fees or restrictions)

*increase “deductibles” on insurance (home, auto, health): reduces premium

Two suggestions to get more “monthly money” to work with in your budget:

1.  Check your tax withholding status. If you normally receive a tax refund, you can ask

your payroll dept about changing your withholding allowances.  For example, if you

got $4800 in refund last year, you paid in $4800 too much ($200 per paycheck if you

get paid every 2 weeks).  Estimate the number of allowances to claim to have about

$200 less held out of every check.  Some employers will allow you to change the

number as often as every pay period, so you might be able to keep adjusting

until you get close to the target amount in your paycheck.  Use the extra money to

pay off debt, then build investments!

  1. If you get paid every 2 weeks, you will have 2 months every year where you get 3

checks instead of 2.  If you are budgeting by the month, capture those 2 extra checks

and leverage them.  Pay off debt, and build investments!

**Very important step:  Before you begin to speed up your debt payoff, be sure that you

have an emergency fund immediately available, preferably in a savings account.  If you

don’t have such a fund, you may want to put your debt-reduction money into a savings

account until you have several thousand dollars set aside.  This will help you avoid using

credit to cover home repairs, car repairs, doctor bills, etc.  A good goal for your emergency

fund is the equivalent of 3 to 6 months’ living expenses.  One option is to build the savings

account to $2000-$3000, and then use part of your debt-reduction money to add to the

savings account until you reach your goal, and use the other part of it to pay down debt.

Remember to speak well of what you have!  Then, look at what you may be spending money on that isn’t necessary.  You may just find yourself surprised by what you discover.  One of our children discovered that they could, indeed, afford to purchase a home they were interested in once they checked for spending leaks, and made the suggested adjustments.

We would love to hear what you discover.  Please post on our facebook page as we love hearing from you.
